Emirates NBD has announced that it will soon roll out a new way for customers to confirm online transactions, moving away from the traditional SMS one-time password (OTP) system.
The Dubai-based bank said that instead of receiving OTPs via text or email, customers will be prompted with a push notification on their phones. Tapping on the alert will take them directly to the ENBD X app, where they can approve or decline the payment.
This transition follows earlier reports highlighting that banks across the UAE plan to gradually discontinue OTPs for digital payments, both domestic and international. The industry-wide shift is aimed at introducing more secure and user-friendly in-app verification systems.
“Soon, you will no longer need to rely on SMS OTPs. When you make a payment with your Emirates NBD debit or credit card, you’ll simply receive a notification guiding you to the ENBD X app to approve the transaction,” the bank said in its customer advisory.
Stronger protection and quicker approvals
Cybersecurity professionals note that moving to in-app authentication offers both convenience and stronger safeguards against fraud. Rayad Kamal Ayub, a cybersecurity specialist, explained that advanced verification technology is key to protecting customer data while streamlining the user experience.
A LexisNexis Risk Solutions study highlighted the high cost of fraud in the UAE, estimating that organisations lose an average of Dh4.19 for every dirham stolen when factoring in direct losses, internal investigations, external expenses, and related costs. The same report revealed that 92 percent of UAE companies believe fraud negatively affects customer satisfaction.
Emirates NBD said its new system will rely on smart pass and biometric checks for additional security. Customers will be able to approve payments instantly through the app, requiring only an internet connection, not a mobile signal.
The lender, one of the largest in Dubai, emphasised that the move is designed to deliver a safer, faster, and more seamless banking experience.
